Courses in the Allied Health Assisting Program
The Health Science Core: Health Science 1 and 2
Health Science 1
Health Science 1 is an Anatomy and Physiology course limited to Medical Academy students. Students will understand the structure and function of the human body systems and learn about careers related to those body systems. Students will also gain an understanding of wellness and disease concepts. The course includes laboratores, including animal dissection. At GCHS, students take HS 1 as the second course in the three-course program (10th, 11th, or 12th grade).
Health Science 2
Health Science 2 covers many topics that all health care profesionals use on a daily basis. Students will gain an understanding of health care delivery systems, health care careers, medical ethics, job skills in health care, infection control, CPR and first aid. The study of medical terminology begins in Health Science 2 and continues throughout the program. At GCHS, students tatke HS 2 as the first course in the three-course program (9th, 10th, or 11th grade).
Health Science students who have completed Health Science 1 and 2 may receive one science credit in Anatomy and Physiology in accordance with s. 1003.491 F.S.
Allied Health Assisting 3
Allied Health Assisting 3 is an in-depth study of three areas of allied health: physical therapy, occupational therapy, and the clinical laboratory. The course provides for both classroom instruction with practice of representative skills, and a clinical component which allows the student the opportuntiy to perform those skills in the health care setting under the supervison of the clinical professional. The clinical component of the course requires that students have their own transportation to the clinical site. Students may take the Medical Administrative Assistant Certification exam during the second semester of this course. This course is the third course in the program sequence. At GCHS, the majority of Medical Academy students take this course in the senior year.
